Chasing the Light?
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is
light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have
fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live
out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us
from all sin.
As a child I remember chasing lightning bugs on warm summer evenings with my cousin Rusty. Before we wandered into the yard, we'd
punch holes in the lid of an empty mayo jar and add grass to their "nest" so the little creatures could
breath. Then we'd scamper after them and lure them into our hands. We loved the way the magical glow from their blinkers lit up our rooms at night.
Lighthouses give off a different kind of light.
One of warning. One the sailors didn't want to chase, but instead steered away
from. Their glow sliced through the black skies and gave a signal to turn away.
Light can be a guide and a warning. The sun's brilliance
illuminates our days. The radiance of a streetlamp shines on a path for safer
passage. The flame of a candle embodies peace. The warmth of a fire gives
comfort. As a follower of Jesus, I've been given the Holy Spirit as my light.
He illuminates the way and leads me. Like a lighthouse, he beams a warning to send
me away from sin. He pours the warmth of comfort over me and draws me nearer to
God. Like a lightning bug, I want to chase him to capture the glow of hope that is Jesus. Praise God for his light in a dark world.

My Lighthouse
1 John 1:5-7

The lighthouse rose from the shore of Lake Erie; a
signal to boats that land was near. Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest
lighthouse in continuous operation on all of the Great Lakes. The 300 mm lens
shines a green signal that flashes every six seconds. Without the light at night,
boats would crash into the limestone along the shore, causing disaster and
possibly death.
I love lighthouses. To me they represent the hope I
find in Jesus, in a dark and difficult world. Without Jesus light I'd be
floating in troubled water, not sure where I might crash. Sadness and sin are
all around me. When I read the news or watch television, I'm sick from the
desolation and destruction people create. That's why in all the sadness and
frustration, I seek the true light, the one who gives me hope and joy. Jesus is
the light that cannot be extinguished. His light of hope is eternal. So even in
the midst of darkness I can walk with Him. Praise God for the light of Jesus!

The Most Magnificent Light
John 1:4-5 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The
light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The rain shot from the sky as the sun shined
through. We've experienced a lot of rain this month in Ohio. Yesterday as the
drops poured, the sun stood its ground (or would that be sky?) and shined
anyway. So bright that sunglasses and visors were required. Isn't that life as
a believer? No matter how much difficulty dumps on me, God's light warms me and
brightens my path.
Psalm 97 reminds me of God's joy-filled light. And
John, he tells the true story of the most magnificent light. Jesus, the light
that carries me out of the storms, the light that lifts me up, the light that
saves my life. Torrential rain, dark clouds, crashing waves, no matter what I
face in life, the light of Jesus shines brighter, warms my heart, and pulls me
out of the darkness. I pray that you know Jesus and have allowed him into your
life. He's the true light.
