No Missed Opportunities
Matthew 4:18-20
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw
two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting
a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus
said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left
their nets and followed him.
I did something I never thought I would do again.
My daughter, Maggie, had a guest pass to Kings Island that
expired on June 30. I hadn’t visited Kings Island in more than thirty years. I’d
gone as a teenager and then as a parent, but I can’t or should I say I won’t
ride the roller coasters or other rides, but she didn’t invite me to the rides,
she invited me to the water park.
Somehow, she talked me into going with her and my grandson. I
trusted her guidance in how far I would have to walk, whether I could handle
the water rides, and if I’d hurt the next day. I’m glad I did. We had a great
day. Not too crowded, not super-hot, but enough sun to make the day enjoyable. The
Zoom Flume and Wave Pool (kind of like the ocean without sand) made the top of
my favorites list, and the next day, I only had a few aches or pains. I’m so glad
I didn’t miss an opportunity to make memories with Maggie and Zeke.
Jesus walked along the Sea of Galilee and called his
disciples. Peter and Andrew dropped their fishing nets and followed. They trusted
the one who asked them to walk with him.
What would have happened if they didn’t take the opportunity
to follow Jesus? They would have missed out on so many amazing experiences, and
we would have missed out on these men of Jesus starting the church.
Their decision to trust Jesus impacted more than themselves.
They impacted the history of the church and the future of believers.
When God called me to write novels, I had other plans, but
he convinced me, and I’m thankful I listened.
What is God calling you to do? Is there an opportunity you don’t
want to miss? Be open to his call.
