Children's Book Review: Stand-Up Guys: 50 Christian Men Who Changed the World by Kate Etue (Author), Caroline Siegrist (Author)

Book Description:
Stand-Up Guys features inspiring stories of Christian men who have made an impact on their communities. Being a man can mean many things, and boys should know they can follow any path they want and still change the world. Featuring important historical figures such as Eric Liddell and George Washington Carver and more recent heroes, such as Robby Novak, aka “Kid President,” and Chef José Andrés, this book will inspire young men to change the world.

Stand-Up Guys features:
  •  50 biographical profiles of current and historical men of faith
  • Historical and current figures that haven’t been featured elsewhere
  •  A colorful interior with illustrations

My Review:
I read through all of the brief biographies and viewed the accompanying illustrations. The book is filled with interesting stories of men who brought positive change to the world. Pulled from many different denominations and belief systems, the men featured regarded their lives as purposeful. One of my favorites is about Clarence Jordan and the path he took to build the foundation of one of the leading non-profits in the world. The book also features athletes, musicians, ministers, artists, scientists and more. These positive role models are good for boys to learn about and emulate. The illustrations are unique and colorful. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Children's Book Review: Piper and Mabel: Two Very Wild but Very Good Dogs by Melanie Shankle, illustrated by Laura Watkins

Book Description:
When the family plans a vacation to the beach, Piper and Mabel are shocked to discover they won’t be joining their people. Instead, they’re headed to doggie day care at the Happy Tails Ranch where they create all kinds of mischief when they discover the accommodations are not exactly what they were expecting.

My Review:
Piper and Mabel are two adventurous dogs. When their family sets out for vacation and leaves them at a kennel, they are less than impressed. So begins the adventure. I love the detailed illustrations by Watkins. They will entertain the littlest reader to the adult reader. The color palette she uses is a bit muted, which is a perfect contrast to the two very wild but very good dogs. Children will enjoy the mischief the two dogs get into and the very satisfying ending. My granddaughter loves animals, especially dogs. I know she'll enjoy Piper and Mabel. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Children's Book Review: Read with Me Bible for Little Ones by Doris Winbeek RIkkers, illustrated by Dennis G. Jones

Book Description:
The Read with Me Bible for Little Ones is the perfect way to introduce the Bible to young children. Featuring simple language and vibrant, full-color illustrations by Dennis Jones, this action-packed padded cover board book is a great way to jump-start literacy and a love of the Bible.

My Review:
The Read with Me Bible for Little Ones features gentle tellings of some of the more common stories of the Bible. I particularly like "Jonah and the Big Fish" because it speaks the truth about what happens when you don't listen. In this case, Jonah didn't listen to God's directions. Each story could also be used for a Bible class in the nursery or preschool class. Although the book doesn't mention the crucifixion, Jesus is depicted going to heaven with the assurance that he'll return someday. I see a lot of good conversation starters for three to four year olds. The illustrations are fun. Young children will enjoy the exaggerated features and big smiles.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
