Store Up Treasures
Hebrews 11:16
Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”Tim and I have been preparing documents giving agent to our family for financial and health decisions, in case we can no longer make those decisions ourselves. It’s not a fun process, nor something I wanted to think about, but considering we aren’t getting any younger, we saw the need.
As we sat with the notary, a wonderful and helpful young lady, I couldn’t help but think how focused our society is on money and material things. Granted, we have to have money to live, and yes; we own more than we need, but what caught my attention was the preparation. We sat together and got our paperwork in order to make life easier for our family, a good idea indeed. In my mind, though, I questioned what else we needed to focus on to be prepared.
The Bible speaks clearly. God wants me to prepare my heart and mind. He offers the hope of heaven, and the only way I’ll meet Jesus is to prepare myself for the day I exit this earth. Instead of getting caught up in earthly matters, including gathering things I don’t need, I want to focus on Jesus, pray, use my time here for whatever purpose he’s given me, read my Bible, and open my heart and mind to God.
I don’t need a notebook of signed documents to be prepared for heaven. Instead, I need a willingness to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior.
Where is your treasure?
