Back to School
Matthew 19:13-14
Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on
them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
The cafeteria smelled like school.
Many of you know I volunteer in my daughter, Sara’s, first
grade class once a week. Per her request, I showed up on the first day to help
get the students settled and organized. I had worked in an elementary school
library for many years, so I was well versed in the craziness of getting
students to the right class, paying for lunches, sorting their school supplies,
and so much more. On top of the hustle and bustle, I wanted to get to know the
kiddos as I looked forward to spending time with them the rest of the school
year.
The teachers and staff in my daughter’s building are top-notch
and care about the children. They prepare these little souls for life with
academic, social, and emotional skills. Sara invites them into her safe and
caring space as she nurtures and encourages them.
Jesus loves the little children and invites them to sit with
him. He told his disciples not to hinder them or stop them from coming to him.
I remember as a child I knew Jesus loved me. His presence in my life calmed me.
Sara’s students looked to us for security and guidance, just
as I look to Jesus now for guidance and wisdom. The children showed confidence
in us, just as I am confident Jesus is with me every step of every day.
Encourage a child, share the love of Jesus, and pray for the
teachers and staff in the public and private schools, and the homeschoolers.
