Still

 Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

    I will be exalted among the nations,

    I will be exalted in the earth.”

Yutori: Japanese word meaning intentionally slowing down just to be, breathe, listen, and appreciate the richness and beauty of life and nature.

On Wednesdays, I posted a word of the week. As a writer, I love coming across interesting words and old-timey words. Last week I posted yutori. I had more responses to this word than I’ve ever had, so I wanted to share it again.

In retirement, I’ve attempted to slow down and appreciate each day. In my newsletters and posts, I probably seem busier than ever, but even with activities and responsibilities, I try to take my time, piddle in my flower garden, read, and try to find beauty in the day.

I believe so many of you responded to the word because, as humans, we long to slow down and be intentional about how we live life. The word intentional is important here. Society has made busyness a badge of honor. At times in life, I’ve felt I needed permission to take time to slow down and enjoy the beauty of nature or to sit and listen to the birds sing, but I don’t. God calls me to be still and listen.

We have so many beeps and dings coming from our phones and computers. One time the electric went out when I worked at the college library. The difference in sound level amazed me. No humming computers or printers. The silence was glorious.

I want to incorporate stillness into my days, admire creation, and appreciate life.

Find moments to whisper a prayer, read a Bible verse, or sit and clear your mind. Watch the summer flowers bloom. Hold your child’s hand, take a longer walk with your dog, or pet your cat. Pray with your spouse or a friend. Incorporate moments where you can listen to the Lord’s guidance and wisdom. Give the Holy Spirit a chance to be heard.

God gives each person purpose, in that purpose acknowledge God and listen.
