The Best Rest

Matthew 11:28-29
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

When God created humans, he didn’t expect us to carry the weight of the world.

Many days I wake up tired instead of refreshed because of fibromyalgia. If you aren’t familiar with the disorder, it causes pain, weariness, and fibro fog, among other things. I combat it by continuing to move and exercise. We walk Rosie May as often as we can, but on the days, I don’t walk, I feel the weight of my neglect.

Some days, the emotional weight is heavier than the physical. I seldom watch the news, but I see so much on social media, I want to toss my phone in the trash. I’m not a doom scroller. I follow as many encouraging and uplifting people as I can, yet the negative news floats to the surface, and it wears me out.

To combat my emotional and physical weariness, I need my spiritual physician. Jesus calls me to come to him and rest, not necessarily from my body being tired, but from me trying to carry my sin and discouragement myself. He calls me to rest in his mercy and grace, to lay down my sins and burdens, and allow him to forgive and carry me. I love that he reminds me he is gentle and humble-hearted. That’s who I need on my side, a Savior who cares for me.

Jesus loves with all his heart, to the point he gave his life for all people. He wants to carry our burdens, release us from the bonds of sin, and bless us with freedom from this world.

Seek him.
