In a Word
John
10:14-16
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know
me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my
life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep
pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall
be one flock and one shepherd.
A shepherd tends his sheep.
Rather
than resolutions, I choose a word for the year. One word I focus on in my
devotional time and in my daily life. In 2025, I chose the word light. I attempted
to be a light in the world where darkness seemed to overwhelm, and I longed to
seek the light God shone on me.
As
Christmas approached, I spent time praying about my word for 2026. I watched
for signs that guided me to a specific word. In the cozy mystery I’m writing, my
focus verses are in Psalm 23. “The Lord is my shepherd.” The word shepherd kept
coming back to me. I’ve also been enamored with Valais Blacknose sheep—an
adorable black-faced creature. Undoubtedly, the Holy Spirit nudged me to choose
the word shepherd.
In John 10,
Jesus announces himself as the good shepherd. A caretaker who knows his sheep.
I love where he says, “my sheep know me.” I long to be in the care of the good
shepherd. In 2026, I hope to know him better than ever.
One thing
about sheep—they tend to follow and trust their shepherd. They are easily
guided to their water and food. I trust Jesus to guide my steps and show me the
path he has laid out for me.
Do you
choose a word or a goal in the new year? Have you prayed about 2026 and sought
guidance?
I thank
God He has given us another year to bring glory to Him.

I do and my word for 2025 was light also. For this year I have been nudged toward “gentle.” The best to you for 2026, Harriet
